More Power to You, Tampa Bay – and starting in January, it will cost Tampa Electric customers even less.

How is this possible?

Chalk it up to lower natural gas prices (a pass-through cost for customers from which Tampa Electric doesn’t profit) along with effective cost management. The result is customer bills that will be $2.25 less a month starting January 2016. In fact, that decrease is part of a trend that amounts to more than a 7 percent reduction in customer bills since 2007. It also means that once January’s new rate goes into effect, the average customer bill for 1,000 kilowatt-hours in a month will be down to $106.22 – among the lowest rates in Florida and the nation.

The Florida Public Service Commission approved Tampa Electric’s request for the change in the fuel charge for customers on Nov. 3.

“We know customers want to save on their energy bills, and we’re proud to be able to deliver rates that are 18 percent below the national average to the communities we serve,” said Gordon Gillette, president of Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas. “Lower fuel costs together with our many energy-saving programs help our customers save energy, money and the environment.”

In addition to those energy-saving programs – which Tampa Electric was the first to offer in Florida starting nearly 40 years ago – the company is hard at work on other initiatives as well.

“We’re finding new and better ways to add sustainability to the equation too,” Gillette said. “Our solar projects are just more examples of what we’re doing for the environment. So while you’re enjoying lower rates and better service, we’re going to keep doing things to make the communities we serve better for everyone.”

And the value the company is committed to providing for customers goes beyond that.

“People who work at Tampa Electric are often customers too and members of the communities we serve, which gives us all a stake in wanting to do our best to make West Central Florida a wonderful place to live, work and do business,” he said. “To that end, TECO team members volunteer thousands of hours in the community to help those in need.

“Whether it’s more power, better reliability, stronger community support or other ways we work to help you, we think everyone can agree that these things – and lower rates in 2016 – provide customer value any way you look at them.”
