They’re straight shooters at H.L. Culbreath Bayside Power Station when it comes to generating safe, reliable, natural gas-fueled power for our customers – but you probably knew that already.

When they take aim at making a significant and lasting positive difference in the community, they hit the mark there as well.

The report begins on Oct. 13 at Tampa Bay Sporting Clays, where TECO team members from Bayside Power Station, joined by others from Big Bend Power Station and Energy Delivery, raised charity dollars through money they paid to shoot clay targets.

The reverberations continued beyond Oct. 25, when TECO team members presented a check for $25,000 to Tampa’s Shriner’s Hospital for Children for the purchase of an EOS imaging system, an x-ray scanner that generates ultra-low levels of radiation and can be administered while a child is standing up – creating a less-stressful situation for Shriner’s young patients and their parents.

“We had 31 teams and about 135 people total for what was an incredible start for the new 501 (c)(3) charitable organization we created, Bayside Charity Corporation,” said Chip Whitworth, manager of Engineering & Maintenance at Bayside Power Station. “This is a great opportunity for us to do something big each year to make a difference in the community because that’s something that’s very important to this compassionate, dedicated group of team members – just like what you’ll find all across TECO.”

In note of thanks from Shriners, Director of Development Alicia Argiz-Lyons shared her appreciation for TECO’s commitment to the hospital, which provides treatment for a wide range of diseases and conditions in children – regardless of whether their families can afford it. Since 1985, Tampa’s Shriners location has helped more than 50,000 children.

“We are thrilled that you raised $25,000 for Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa through your inaugural Charity Shoot!” she said. “The EOS Imaging System, with 7-9 times less radiation than digital x-rays, is equipment we really need. Our heartfelt thanks to you and your team for organizing a successful fundraiser to help further our mission!”

Whitworth said the Bayside team’s decision to help Shriners was an easy choice.

“Members of my family have been the beneficiaries of Shriners’ wonderful work and the same is true of others at Bayside, so it was a cause that was very near and dear to our hearts,” he said – adding that the activity that attracted the donations was a great bonus. “The weather was perfect, the camaraderie was outstanding and everyone had a terrific time.”
