Ricky Boyette is more than an associate document processor; he’s a trailblazer.

Celebrating five years with Tampa Electric, Boyette is the company’s longest-tenured team member from Pepin Academies. A tuition-free, Tampa-based nonprofit charter school, Pepin educates students in kindergarten through college age with diagnosed learning and learning-related disabilities. The school, opening a new branch in Riverview, Fla., for the 2013-14 school year, also helps its students transition into self-sufficiency through its free job-training program for people ages 18 to 22 with learning disabilities.

At Tampa Electric, Boyette handles a variety of important tasks including processing Accounts Payable mail for scanning with the Document Services team led by Amy Jones, supervisor of administrative services.

Jones said Boyette’s contributions illustrate the value that students from Pepin can offer.

“As the students from Pepin help us with much-needed tasks, they’re learning new skills and how to succeed in a work environment,” Jones said. “By the end of the school year, you really see their social skills and interpersonal relations evolve. It’s very rewarding.

“In Document Services, even if we can’t hire [every student who comes to the company from Pepin], we can still help prepare them for jobs at other companies,” she added.

David Kinghorn, manager of Administrative Services, agreed.

“It’s not if they can benefit your company – it’s how much,” Kinghorn said. “And when you utilize what they can bring, you’re helping them grow and develop as people and professionals.”

At a breakfast celebration in honor of Boyette’s five-year milestone on July 22, Kinghorn pointed to the admiration Boyette receives from his team and people throughout the company – appreciation that Boyette returns.

“This is a good place to work,” said Boyette, a third-generation Tampa Electric team member. “There are a lot of good people here.”
