Community Company For Home Savings for Home

EcoFest 2014 looks to draw big crowds – and hopefully you too – to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo

Celebrate Earth Day with your family and friends this Saturday at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, where Tampa Electric team members will be on hand to put the “eco” in “TECO.” It’s the fifth annual EcoFest, it’s bigger than ever, and admission is free.

EcoFest, seen here in 2013, has grown to a bigger venue for this year's Earth Day.

The event, in the zoo band shell outside the main entrance, will include live music, workshops, demonstrations, informational booths and green-living products and services. Also on hand will be local artists, green businesses, environmental organizations, alternative health practitioners, renewable energy specialists and representatives from local organic farms and gardens with produce for sale.

Some of those renewable energy specialists, joined by energy efficiency experts, people from the Manatee Viewing Center and others, will be TECO team members.

“EcoFest ties into so many things that are important to this company, from sustainability to energy efficiency to having a positive presence in the community,” said Heather Santana, Weatherization program manager with Tampa Electric. “I encourage everybody to come to EcoFest. Last year’s event was terrific and this one is even bigger, which suggests that the ideas behind EcoFest are catching on with more people.”

Organizers of EcoFest are Learning Gate Community School, the city of Tampa and the USF Patel College of Global Sustainability. Last year’s high attendance at the event’s former site, Learning Gate school, compelled planners to seek a bigger venue.

“One way we each as individuals can be a force for positive change is to be part of a dialogue about things like using energy wisely and renewable energy,” Santana said. “More people seem to be interested in having that conversation, and TECO is proud to be part of it too.”

EcoFest 2014 happens 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 12 at the Lowry Park band shell area. For additional information, please email ecofest@learninggate.org or call (813) 948-4190.
