Savings for Home

Home energy conservation checklist

All year round, Tampa Electric has energy-efficiency programs that help you save money while you maintain comfort, whether it’s cold or hot (or somewhere in between).

Almost everyone would like to make their home as energy efficient as possible. Not only can it help reduce energy bills, it’s also good for the environment. So how can you conserve energy in your home? It doesn’t have to be difficult – just make a few simple changes using this checklist:

Heating and Cooling

Heating and cooling your home is typically the most expensive energy expense. To reduce the amount of energy used, make sure you have proper insulation. Consider installing weather stripping around windows to keep cool air from escaping. Window treatments can also make a big difference. For example, cellular (or honeycomb) shades can help block out light in the summer and conserve heat in the cooler months. You should also regularly maintain your air conditioning system so it’s working at optimal levels. Another great idea is to have a smart thermostat, which can help save money on your utilities throughout the year.

Appliances

Because older appliances tend to be less efficient, you might consider replacing them with newer models that bear the Energy Star label. These run more efficiently and cost you less in the long run. Power strips can help you save too. Simply flip the switch off when not in use. This will help avoid energy vampires from using extra electricity.

Lighting

We’re all guilty of leaving lights on in unoccupied rooms. Make an effort to turn off unneeded lights. Automated lighting is another energy conscious decision, as are motion-activated systems. Install energy efficient light bulbs, which use less energy than traditional bulbs.
