It was all sun and smiles for children and TECO volunteers at A Brighter Community

The sun was bright and the smiles even more so at A Brighter Community on June 17, as team members spent an afternoon engaging with the staff and students at the oldest non-profit preschool in Hillsborough County.

A group from Energy Management Services was on hand to supervise games, an obstacle course, ice cream treats and more at the United Way-affiliated school, which is nestled in the quiet streets near the westward curve of Interstate 275 just north of downtown Tampa.

“We love working with TECO!” said Juanita McClinton Lee, director of A Brighter Community. “We have about 75 children here now, and our mission is to ensure that they’re school-ready. And anyone who wants to is welcome to volunteer here at any time.”

The teambuilding day came together through the coordination of Energy Management Analyst JC Alvarez, who got the idea from Luis de la Torre, supervisor of Inventory Management and a member of the board of directors of A Brighter Community.

“We jumped at the opportunity to help out at A Brighter Community,” Alvarez said. “And beyond that, of course, the day was a ton of fun for the whole team.”

Energy Management Analyst Jackie Hines echoed Alvarez.

“The experience allowed us to do something good for the children while we did something good for our team,” Hines said. “We helped encourage the children to be active – which helps develop their motor skills – while we strengthened our bonds as a working group. It was a great afternoon all around.”
