March for Babies has special meaning for Field Operations team

You don’t have to walk a mile in this team’s shoes to see why they had to walk 3.2 miles – and raise $430 – to help babies.

Gordon Hudson, supervisor of Field Operations with Central Service Area Operations, said his team joined the March of Dimes’ March for Babies fundraiser on April 27 for reasons that went beyond a commitment to the community. He was among those with a personal connection to the cause.

“A couple of years ago when my twin grandsons were born prematurely, they had some breathing problems and were in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for seven days; today they are healthy and are a handful for this grandpa,” Hudson said. “Another team member whose son was born prematurely was in the NICU for eight days. I’m sure many people can relate to these stories and have one of their own to tell; the March of Dimes is another opportunity for us to give back to our community.”

The March for Babies raises funds for research into the causes of premature birth. It also helps pay for programs to help the mothers of babies born too soon. Under a clear, Saturday morning sky, the Field Operations team members walked through the Channelside district to Bayshore Boulevard and back. Hudson said the team enjoyed the experience so much they plan to do it again.

“We had 12 walkers representing 80 Field Operations team members,” Hudson said. “Maybe we’ll get even more out there next year. Even better, we hope to make the March of Dimes Walk for Babies an annual event for our team.”
