MVC attracts people and manatees alike in its new season

Manatee at the MVC
A manatee surfaces at the MVC. The clean, warm water of the Big Bend Power Station discharge canal has drawn more than 330 manatees at one time for the public to see up close.

Like the manatees most come to see, visitors young and old have been steady fixtures at the Manatee Viewing Center since the start of its 26th season on Nov. 1.

Manatees typically visit the clean, warm water discharge canal of Big Bend Power Station when the water temperature of Tampa Bay is below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Polarized sunglasses and telescopic viewfinders on the MVC’s observation platform make it easier to see manatees in the water alongside tarpon, mullet, black tip sharks, nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays and other marine life.

In the MVC’s education building, games, puzzles, video kiosks, a mangrove display and more will take you on a journey through the lifecycle of the manatee and the environmentally responsible generation of electricity for the community. In the MVC parking lot, visitors can use two electric vehicle charging stations. This supports Tampa Electric’s participation in the Clean Cities Coalition effort to grow charging and natural gas fueling infrastructure for alternative fuel vehicles in West Central Florida.

While the MVC’s public profile is on the rise through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more, the best place to go, as more than 3 million people since 1986 can attest, is the center itself.

Enjoy free parking and admission at the MVC through the end of its 2012-2013 season on April 15, 2013.
