Saving Money on Your Air Conditioning in Florida

Trees can help cool structures by creating shade; for everything else, there’s air conditioning.

Here in the Sunshine State, we enjoy a tropical climate, beautiful beaches and warm weather – what’s not to love? But during the summer, the heat and humidity can be a bit much. Air conditioning in Florida is a must, but it can ramp up your utility bills and cost you a lot of money.

If you love the feeling of cool air but not the price tag that come along with it, here are some great tips:

Insulate!

If your home isn’t properly insulated you’re going to end up paying to cool down the entire neighborhood. Air can escape (and heat gets in) through any crack, so install weather stripping and insulation to windows and areas like attics. Schedule a free Home Energy Audit for suggestions on how to improve your insulation, as well as your overall energy efficiency.

Help Your Home Along

You can help your home along by making simple changes. For example, use your window treatments to block out the sun during the harshest, hottest times of day. During the evening make sure to circulate the air in your home by opening up windows and doors (including those to closets etc.) This helps air to move around and feel more fresh.

Use Fans

During cooler times of the day you don’t need the whole house to be air conditioned, so if you want to save some money, use fans for specific areas. You can also use ceiling fans to cool rooms down, and they use a fraction of the electricity of air conditioning.

Choose Energy Efficient Models

If you’re installing a new air conditioner, then opt for an energy-efficient model. It will work better, be cleaner in terms of its carbon footprint, and save you money in the long run. Living in Florida, a big reason people feel uncomfortable is because of the excess of humidity in the air, so look for a unit which offers humidity control.

Maintain

You need to maintain your current air conditioner to make sure it’s doing its job properly. Check and change the filters regularly, and have the A/C unit professionally serviced at least once a year.
