In a more normal September in Florida, watching the thermometer go up isn’t usually something that brings relief. But the thermometer graphic on the tampaelectric.com home page tells a different story – it shows the percentage of our customers with power back on climbing after Hurricane Irma.

More than 4,000 TECO workers and out-of-area crews helping us are in the community right now, working safely around the clocks in shifts, to get power restored for everyone we serve. To do that kind of challenging work, they need lots of help. And to that end, other TECO team members who are supporting their efforts are out in full force – at our call center, at our incident bases, on the streets of the community and elsewhere.

For those of you who went without power for several days as we worked, with help from other utilities, through the impacts of a hurricane that produced a history-making restoration effort, know that you’re not alone: many TECO employees lost power and some are still without it. Even one of those helping lead the restoration work, Director of Substation & Meter Operations David Sweat, only yesterday got his lights at home back on.

“It has certainly allowed me to empathize with our customers, as my friends and family were also all without power for days,” Sweat said. “As an employee, people just assume you have the upper hand in getting your power on quickly. That is definitely not the case. I can tell you they don’t play favorites!”

Scroll down to see some scenes you might have caught on our Facebook page about our work to restore service for our customers as quickly and safely as possible. At the same time, we’re grateful for your patience – and we won’t rest until you and everyone we’re proud to serve has power.
