Tampa Electric helps theme park Go Green on Earth Day

Central Florida’s LEGOLAND® is the first theme park ever to “go green” on Earth Day 2014, made possible through Tampa Electric’s Renewable Energy program.

The park purchased 27,800 kilowatt-hours of electricity generated from renewable sources like the sun to power the entire park all day today – Earth Day!

By going green this Earth Day, the park lightens its footprint by offsetting 24 tons of carbon dioxide – this is like removing three cars from the road for one year.

New solar array installed at LEGOLAND

Wait, there’s more! Representatives from LEGOLAND and Tampa Electric, students from local schools and other park visitors are on hand today to flip the switch on an all-new Tampa Electric-owned, 30,000-watt solar photovoltaic (PV) system installed atop LEGOLAND’S Imagination Zone.

A PV system this size is capable of generating enough electricity from the sun to power three average-sized homes and offset about 40 tons of carbon dioxide per year – equivalent to planting more than nine acres of trees.
Later this summer, LEGOLAND also will unveil a large interactive globe made entirely of LEGOS.

Located right outside the Imagination Zone, electricity from additional solar panels will power the rotation of the globe, showing visitors of all ages how solar energy is created, how clouds and the angle of the sun impact generation and how electricity is transported from a solar array to a home or business.

The interactive display will complement the existing energy lab located inside the Imagination Zone, where children learn about all forms of energy.

Renewable Energy program helps fund solar arrays

The LEGOLAND PV system is Tampa Electric’s seventh array installed across West Central Florida.

Combined, the company-owned PV systems have a capacity of more than 135 kilowatts (or 135,000 watts) — enough to power over 15 homes.

Funding to install the arrays comes from residential and business customers who purchase one or more 200-kilowatt-hour blocks of renewable energy each month through the company’s Renewable Energy program.
