Tampa Electric and LEGOLAND Florida® partnership sets solar-powered globe in motion

Earlier this year – on April 22 (Earth Day 2014), to be exact – Tampa Electric celebrated the installation of a company-owned, 30-kilowatt solar array at LEGOLAND Florida in Winter Haven. This system joins six others that Tampa Electric has installed at various locations across West Central Florida, including the Florida Aquarium, the Museum of Science and Industry and Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. A new solar-powered globe appears at LEGOLAND

Last week, representatives from Tampa Electric and LEGOLAND unveiled a Tampa Electric-funded, 6-foot-diameter LEGO globe, which will operate by solar power at the Imagination Zone attraction inside the theme park.

brightness of the sun, showing visitors how clouds or darkness affect photovoltaic power. LEGOLAND Florida’s Imagination Zone operates with renewable energy every day through Tampa Electric’s Renewable Energy program.

“Tampa Electric is proud to partner with LEGOLAND to educate children and families about alternative energy,” said Gordon Gillette, president of Tampa Electric & Peoples Gas. “By making solar power interactive and educational, we’re helping the community to better understand the role renewable sources play in our energy future.”

All seven of Tampa Electric’s community-sited solar systems, including this solar globe, are funded through the company’s Renewable Energy program. Collectively, the solar systems are capable of generating 135,000 watts of electricity, or enough energy to power more than 15 average-sized homes.

You can support renewable energy

Our Renewable Energy program makes it easy for customers to purchase a portion of their electricity from renewable sources by signing up for $5 blocks of renewable energy. For each block purchased, Tampa Electric will distribute 200 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy to the power grid that serves the community. The program also features an option to power a one-time event with renewable energy. In 2013 alone, Tampa Electric customers purchased more than 7 million kWh of renewable energy – enough to power more than 500 homes for one year.
