Tampa Electric has secured an environmentally friendly team of experts who are outstanding in their field: Katahdin sheep.
These rented sheep are flocking to TECO’s new solar fields to keep the grass short.
No, we’re not trying to pull the wool over your eyes – grazing sheep provide a significant cost savings over traditional mechanical lawn mowers, and they are better for the environment.
The sheep have adequate food, water, shade and shelter. A team of experts monitors their health several times a week. Tampa Electric has installed special fencing to discourage predators. This breed of sheep has hair, not wool, so they are better suited for Florida’s climate.
For the next few weeks, you can see mama and baby lambs featured on the TECO Lamb Cam through our Facebook page.
We are about halfway toward adding 600 megawatts (MW) of solar energy to our fleet, and all 10 projects will benefit from our furry friends. When this solar expansion is complete in 2021, Tampa Electric will have nearly 7 percent of its energy generated from the sun – the highest percentage of solar generation of any utility in the state.
And also, perhaps, the highest percentage of sheep.
