When Tracy Moore lost her husband Marc, a lineman with Lakeland Electric, to a power line accident in 2002, she gained a mission in life: to promote electrical safety to as many people as she could. On Sept. 10, her nonprofit Highline Hero Foundation gained $2,500 from TECO team members who have taken her story and guidance to heart.

Team members presented the check to Moore at a safety meeting at Winter Haven Operations, where Moore has addressed line crews on multiple occasions.

“To us, Tracy is part of the Winter Haven family,” said Thad Lopez, manager of transmission & distribution operations with Tampa Electric’s Winter Haven Operations team. “She’s spoken at every Tampa Electric service area and shares her expertise with people around the world. We hope this money helps her help more people stay safe.”

Moore praised Tampa Electric’s strong safety culture and said the company’s commitment to safety from its top leadership to frontline team members is a critical part of that. She said this puts the company’s values directly in line with those of Highline Hero, which she launched as a way to help her deal with grief from Marc’s death. The foundation has since grown into something much bigger.

“It started as a way I could keep my husband’s memory alive, but I realized I didn’t want to wait for (accidents) to happen – I wanted to do my part to prevent them,” Moore said.

Clyde Roberds, coordinator of Safety and Industrial Health, said it was appropriate that the contribution to Highline Hero would come from Energy Delivery.

“This is a really good ground for safety training – there’s a nice mix of younger guys and experienced team members,” Roberds said. “They all benefit from hearing what Tracy has to say. She’s done a lot of good for the company.”
