Golf Cart Mechanic Richey White kept people moving across Big Bend Power Station’s 1,500 acres for more than four years. But when a stroke limited the contractor’s own mobility and ability to work, Tampa Electric team members demonstrated their Respect and Concern for Others – and they did it with a sense of urgency.

“Richey always has been a congenial man and has kept our carts serviced to the best of anyone’s ability,” said Rick Bramel, project administrator of Coal Field Projects with Engineering and Project Management. “He always went out of his way to accommodate any person’s needs for cart repairs.”

When Bramel and others at Big Bend learned about White’s condition, they acted quickly to help. Joining him were Vivienne Davis, lead administrative specialist with Big Bend’s Safety & Environmental team; Christine West, coordinator of Safety & Industrial Health with Energy Supply Services; and, from Power Engineering & Construction, Planning Associate Amy Hackney and Senior Administrative Specialist Vicky Lamb. They set up a website for donations and organized a soup and chili benefit at TECO Plaza. In the span of just a week, they raised $1,862 for White and his family.

And more help was on the way. A contracted company at Big Bend, Weimer Services, built a deck and ramp at White’s home to accommodate his new electric scooter.

“They weren’t even asked – they just did the right thing,” Bramel said. “Everybody jumped in. I’m especially proud of the Tampa Electric team members who showed once again that they’re truly compassionate people who help to individuals in need.”

White’s wife Stacey echoed praise for the effort in an email to Bramel.

“Things are coming along … [Richey still has] a lot more therapy to go,” she said. “I want to thank you and everyone there for everything. It means the world to us that you all have helped like you have. We truly are blessed by the love and support given to us by the entire TECO family.”
