In a single afternoon of community-focused work, members of TECO Energy’s Business Strategy, Analysis & Policy team helped package more than 7,760 meals for families that don’t have enough to eat.

The team members spent July 19 at a warehouse in Tampa run by Feeding America Tampa Bay, a nonprofit agency that helps feed the hungry. The organization, part of the largest domestic hunger relief organization in the United States, distributes donated food and other items to charities that feed those in need.

Katie Guice, director of Business Strategy and Energy Policy, said the team members’ experience – their second effort at Feeding America Tampa Bay – was a valuable opportunity for teambuilding while they helped others. It also supported the team’s goal to do similar work on a quarterly basis.

“We quickly fell into a rhythm of sorting pallets of food and non-food items (diapers, band-aids, soap, toys, and a few unmentionables), breaking down boxes and starting over again!” Guice said. “We all had a sense of pride and accomplishment in helping people receive food and health items and seeing that these items didn’t go to waste.”

Jennifer Shelton, senior admin specialist, helped coordinate her team’s day at Feeding America – an effort that Lindsey Bressi, volunteer services coordinator with Feeding America Tampa Bay, praised.

“Your time spent with us makes a significant difference in helping our community diminish domestic hunger,” Bressi wrote in an email of thanks to Shelton. “Our primary mission is to end hunger and nourish hope across the ten counties we serve, and we would be unable to reach this goal without the efforts of our volunteers. I cannot thank you enough for everything you have done to help us realize our mission.”
