TECO team helps fill Chrissy’s Closet to help children in need

Chrissy’s Closet is a little fuller after donations from Tampa Electric’s Credit & Collections team.

Chrissy Dorion, who runs her namesake charity, collects clothing, toiletries, laundry detergent and other items to help children transitioning out of the Hillsborough County juvenile justice system; she also provides free items to other students in need who present a referral from a teacher or guidance counselor. And she said Jan. 20 donations from TECO, in an effort overseen by Gerri Drummond, coordinator of Credit & Collections, had her feeling “grateful.”

“You don’t know how much I appreciate the donations from TECO that Gerri brought,” Dorion said.

Drummond’s team collected dozens of items for Chrissy’s Closet, which operates out of space at Gary Adult High School in Tampa. Dorion said that with TECO’s donations, and especially after publicity she received on Bay News 9, her storage space is close to full – but that she’s always looking for new or gently worn items including socks, jeans, belts, laundry detergent and more.

“A room full of donations for me to go through is a wonderful problem to have,” Dorion said.

Drummond said the first donation to Chrissy’s Closet that she coordinated won’t be the last.

“This is something I intend to continue,” Drummond said.

Dorion said that 22 years of work in the juvenile justice system have shown her just how critical it is to help young people with limited options return – or join – a life that many others take for granted.

“No kid should have to earn the right to go to school,” Dorion said. “But if kids don’t have the clothes to wear, they won’t go to school.”

She added, “(TECO) brought so much of what we need to help these kids. My heart is full.”
