Haley’s Cove is where the heart is for TECO team members helping veterans

Long ago, the residents of Haley’s Cove Community Living Center made great sacrifices in service to their country. On July 9, TECO team members made it their mission to provide great service to those at the long-term care facility, part of the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital.

Tampa Electric’s Engineering & Project Management team joined employees of Zachry, a contracted electrical company that works with TECO, to upgrade the outdoor recreation area at Haley’s Cove with new plants, mulch, signs and more. They even installed extensions to lower the fans from the vaulted ceiling at the home’s community room to better cool its 49 residents.

Amy Hackney, planner estimator with Tampa Electric, coordinated the volunteer activity for her TECO team members (“With lots of help!” she stressed). The effort came after months of coordination between TECO and the Veteran’s Administration.

“I think the residents of Haley’s Cove were thrilled,” Hackney said. “They really appreciated the way an outside group wanted to come in and make their living environment a little better.”

The thanks were just as strong from the hospital staff.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” said Suzanna Hargraves, a recreation therapist who works with residents of Hayley’s Cove, in an email to Hackney. “I hope you all can visit us again and continue the great plans you have for us.”

Hackney said she’s determined to see that happen.

“Just interacting with residents who don’t often get to see people from the outside was rewarding,” she said. “We definitely plan to come back to do more. The veterans at Haley’s Cove have done so much for their country; the least we can do is help them feel more at home.”
