In April, we told you about the barbecue cook-off for charity that turned the International Showmen’s Association into a carnival of great food and family fun in Riverview, Fla.

On May 6, in the more sedate atmosphere of TECO Plaza, TECO team members presented $12,000 to help the Red Hills Wounded Warrior Group continue its efforts to work with injured veterans.

The total amount contributed to Red Hills includes $9,000 raised at the barbecue and $3,000 donated by TECO Energy. TECO team members from Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas organized the event, which raises money for a different charitable cause each year.

“Our injured veterans deserve the kind of help to feel normal again that Red Hills can give them, and the community deserves an event like the cook-off for charity that brings together families and friends for a good cause,” said Tom Jordan, supervisor of Distribution Design with Tampa Electric.

Jordan said plans are already in the works for next year’s barbecue cook-off for charity – and that participants wouldn’t have it any other way.

“TECO is a company uniquely connected to the community since so many of us are also customers,” Jordan said. “We put 100 percent into making a positive difference for the people we serve because it’s part of our corporate culture. The fun that everyone has at the cook-off year after year feels even more rewarding because they know it helps people in need.”
