Sometimes a new year means a new start for people in tough spots; sometimes it takes a new home, even one that’s temporary. For the abused and homeless women and children who count on the Mary & Martha House on the path to more stable lives, their stay will be a little brighter in 2015 thanks to new paint applied by Tampa Electric team members.

The team, with Tampa Electric’s South Hillsborough Operations, worked with the nonprofit organization in November. It was the latest of several times TECO volunteers have donated their time to work with the Ruskin, Fla.-based Mary & Martha House.

For Distribution Design Technician Dillon Ramsey, who coordinated the effort for his team, the day was an opportunity to work with his peers as they helped those in need.

“While the residents of the home were at work and school for the day, our team was able to come in to clean and paint the house and have it ready for the women to return that evening to a freshly painted home!” Ramsey said.

Laurie Herring, director of Programs and Housing with Mary & Martha House, praised the team’s work.

“They did a phenomenal job – the painting was needed in a major way, and they did some cleaning for us as well,” Herring said. “As rooms turn over to new families, you can imagine that children will color on the walls and that kind of thing happens. A nice, freshly painted room can really help brighten the mood for a family going through a tough time.”
