They’re too young to own homes, and you won’t see even the oldest among them behind the wheel of a car for at least a couple more years. But the students of Rampello Magnet School in Tampa know commitment to the community when they see it – and they saw a lot of it when Tampa Electric brought its electric vehicles and residential energy-saving programs to the school’s recent Mega Night celebration.

Mega Night – a showcase for arts, science and more with hands-on activities for students – was a good opportunity for Tampa Electric to occupy a spot in the packed cafeteria on April 7 to demonstrate the many ways the company brings value to customers’ lives, said Wendy Anastasiou, supervisor of the Energy Management Services Residential Audit team at Tampa Electric (and proud Rampello parent). TECO team members who joined her included Ray Matava, Ian Sprawls, Marlinda Steponaitis and Tison Vega.

“We had a great time at Mega Night – we signed up customers for free home energy audits, which can help people save good money on their electric bills, and we had a lot of interest in Energy Planner as well, which offers lower rates for electricity 87 percent of the time,” Anastasiou said.

“Not only that, but we’re also helping people protect their sensitive electronics at home with our Zap Cap Systems surge protection – customers signed up for that as well,” she added. “It was a great night inside and outside the school.”

Outside, TECO team members answered questions about cars from the company’s Green Fleet of electric vehicles. Tampa Electric’s growing Green Fleet includes all-electric Nissan LEAFs, extended-range Chevy Volts, a Cadillac ELR, trouble trucks with battery-powered buckets and more – and with the extensive information on our website, we’re helping educate the public about alternative fuel vehicles that might be right for their budget and lifestyle. We’ve also signed a pledge with the U.S. Department of Energy to become a “workplace charging partner,” and we offer charging stations at several locations open to the public, such as Tampa Electric’s Manatee Viewing Center.

“Mega Night is one more way Rampello makes having fun educational for students, and for the TECO volunteers who attended, they had a great experience making education fun for children and their parents,” said Bruce Napier, senior administrator of Organizational Development with TECO. “We’ll be back for sure and we look forward to showing current and future customers how hard we work to make the community a better place.”
