Having an energy efficient home can save you energy and money – it makes for a more comfortable home and helps protect the planet too. What steps can you take to make your home energy efficient? It’s easier than you might think. Remember, you can always make changes gradually over time to plan your budget in advance while saving money along the way.

Energy Efficient Lighting
One simple step you can take is to replace you incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). This immediately reduces how much electricity each light fixture uses. In addition, they last much longer, saving you money in the long run. Placing lamps in strategic places also helps keep rooms well lit, while reducing costs.

Water
Reducing your water consumption is a great way to save on your utility costs. Look into how energy efficient your water heater is – an older model won’t heat water as effectively, costing you more. Try turning the temperature down on your water heater, even by a few degrees, in order to reduce costs.

Insulation
Keeping your home properly insulated is extremely important. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a cold or warm climate – insulation is essential. You can save on your heating bill as well as your air-conditioning by installing better windows and treatments. Look into weather stripping tape, and into other areas of your house to see how they can be improved.

Appliances
When you’re ready to upgrade appliances, look for the ENERGY STAR label. These appliances will work far more efficiently and save you money in the long run. Avoid leaving your electronics on standby, and keep an eye out for the dreaded “Vampire Electronics” that draw power even when turned “off.”
