You see them popping up everywhere – your grocery store, drug store, the library, Tampa International Airport and parking spaces in downtowns all across West Central Florida and beyond. What are they? Public charging stations – or what some might call a modern day fuel pump. They’re being tapped into by an increasing number of drivers who are quietly zipping around Tampa Bay in plug-in electric vehicles (EVs).

Charging the Chevy VoltYou don’t have to drive far before you share the road with a Chevy Volt, Nissan LEAF, Tesla Model S, Ford Fusion Energi or another type of EV. Manufacturers are coming out with new models every year. Some have recently announced improvements they’re making to existing models, such as the second generation Chevy Volt, which will be released this fall. The 2016 Volt will arrive with a lighter-weight battery and an increased all-electric range of more than 50 miles.
